The Amsterdam Museum, until 2011 called the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, is a museum about the history of Amsterdam. Since 1975, it is located in the old city orphanage between Kalverstraat and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal.
Just as the name suggests, this museum is all about Amsterdam. The museum has various interesting exhibitions about the city’s historical and geographical developments. Photos, paintings, interactive maps, and statues are just some of the things you’ll find here.

The Amsterdam Gallery (before Schuttersgalerij), a covered street leading from Begijnensteeg to the museum, is one of the few freely accessible 'museum streets' in the world. Original group portraits, made between 1530 and [present day by artists such as Bartholomeus van der Helst and photographer Rineke Dijkstra, hang in the gallery. Even Goliath can be found here: our world famous 350-year-old wooden giant.

The Amsterdam Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
ACCESSIBILITY
The Amsterdam Museum is located in a beautiful historic building. The rich history of the building not only provides a special atmosphere, but also a complicated route, various level differences and many stairs. There are lifts in the building that give you access to most exhibition halls. A single room is unfortunately not accessible for a wheelchair. Unfortunately it is not possible to visit the museum with a mobility scooter or an electric wheelchair.
Despite the poor accessibility of the building, we do our utmost to ensure that everyone has a pleasant visit to our museum. Therefore do not hesitate to talk to an employee during your visit: they will be happy to help you.

Are you hard of hearing, but would you like to know more about the city of Amsterdam? Then come to our tour especially for the hearing impaired. Your friends, family and supervisors are of course also very welcome. With the support of a writing interpreter (velowalker), the museum teacher brings the history of the city to life. Are you blind or visually impaired and would you like to find out more about the city of Amsterdam? Then come to our tour especially for visitors with a visual impairment. Your friends, family and supervisors are of course also very welcome. Smelling, feeling, listening are even more central.
Facilities for blind and visually impaired visitors
Registered assistance dogs are permitted. Bringing pets is not allowed.
Plan for wheelchair and walker users
During your visit you can use the special plan for wheelchair users ( here to download). The museum has a wheelchair loan that you can book through: boekingen@amsterdammuseum.nl or 730 020-5231 (Mon / Fri 13:00 to 17:00 hours). Unfortunately it is not possible to visit the museum with a mobility scooter or an electric wheelchair.
Accompanied by disabled people free access
Do you want to take someone to help you? Handicapped persons receive free admission. It is possible to borrow a stool during the museum visit. These are light and easy to carry. The stool is available at the information desk at the entrance.
